This is the first year watching the Super Bowl that I am disappointed because of the freezing up effect during the game and commercials. Missed a couple of things during the game.

THIS YEAR'S DRAGFEST2008 HELD AT THE AUTOCLUB-FAMOSO RACEWAY HAS GENERATED AN INFLUX OF CASH THIS WEEKEND. OFFSETING THE RECENT LACK OF TOURISM DUE TO THE PRICE OF FUEL AND PENNY PINCHING ALL OF US HAVE HAD TO ENDURE.

I PREDICT THAT GATE RECEIPT'S AND VENDOR SALE'S + AREA SERVICE'S AND LODGING EXPEXCT TO TOTAL 2.5 MIL.

WHAT? YOUTH CROSS COUNTRY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

WHO? ALL CHILDREN FROM THE AGES OF 7-12 WHO LIVE IN THE BAKERSFIELD AREA, MALE AND FEMALE.

WHERE? STATED ABOVE

WHEN? STATE ABOVE, THE LENGTH OF SEASON IS FROM EARLY SEPTEMBER TO THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER, TRACK SEASON STARTS FEBRUARY 1, 2008.

WHY? HAVE FUN, MEET FRIENDS, SET GOALS, WORK HARD, SELF-ESTEEM, WIN AWARDS, PHYSICAL FITNESS AND COMPETITION

HOW? COME SIGN UP AND TRAIN WITH THE TEAM . THERE ARE 8-10 RACES, DEPENDING ON SUCCESS LEVEL. WORK OUTS WILL BE 1-4 MILES LONG DEPENDING ON PHYSICAL FITNESS LEVEL. RACE ARE GENERALLY 1/2 MILE TO 2 MILES DEPENDING ON GRADE LEVEL AND AGE.

COST? FREE, EXCEPET FOR COST OF UNIFORMS AND SHOES. SHOES ARE RECOMMENDED BUT SPECIAL SHOES ARE NOT REQUIRED. THERE ARE ALSO SOME SMALL FEES FOR EACH RACE, GENERALLY AROUND 3-5 DOLLARS. WE MIGHT ALSO NEED TO ORGANIZE A COUPLE OF FUND RAISERS FOR COURSE MARKING EQUIPEMET AND END OF THE SEASON TRIPS.

The Growing Sport of Bicycling

The Sport of Bicycling is growing in Bakersfield. The big box stores are selling two wheel econobikes like crazy. The bicycling stores in Bakersfield are busy selling quality bicycles, from several hundred dollars in to the thousands of dollars and outfitting their riders in the latest gear. With all the hoop-la in global warming, you'd think bicycling would make the news as a healthy alternative to driving the car. In fact, when Californias premier, nationally recognized, week long staged bicycle race got underway on Sunday the 18th, you'd think there would be some local coverage(besides the wonderful piece in the Californian).

Many from Bakersfield will be making the "trek" to various So Cal destinations to take part in the Amgen Tour of California. Some will travel to San Luis Obispo to witness Stage 5 on Thursday. Television news would do well to highlite this race featuring a host of professional riders from many well recognized national teams. I think that this week bicyclists will not be watching the late nite additions of the local news. Their tuners and DVR's will be on the old OLN network, now called Verses for the nightly tour broadcast. Similar to the Tour De France, local news outlets are not our source. Someday, when the entertainment of NASCAR runs out of fuel and the NWE becomes even more boring than it is, we may get some coverage. Until then, we'll keep riding on our Bicycle trail, sharing it with walkers, runners, and numerous large piles of dog poop deposited by dogs no more smarter than their owners.
