May I share my reflections on the 5-year "anniversary" of our involvement in Iraq without the usual pep talk or rancor.

I don't recall the source but I remember reading that it takes about 100 years to pay off a war and leave it behind us. When this country observed the Civil War Centennial, the last war veteran had passed away, horrific battlefields were tranquil parks, stone memorials showed weathering, and a vestige of that terrible time, segregation and civil rights, was becoming a resolved issue.

I have heard it said that logic cannot be applied to an illogical situation. However history explains it, war remains an illogical situation. Any issue that requires the taking of human life to be resolved is not a proud moment; rather, it is a tragic commentary that someone at some time failed to do what is right.

We can (and should) honor our war dead; we can memorialize them; we can express anguished regret; we can celebrate their lives, but they are dead nonetheless. Like the Civil War, bereaved loved ones and friends can ask "why?" and not get an answer.

Since 9/11, I catch myself occassionally wishing this mess were over and our lives can return to normal. Then I slap myself and face reality: Normal is a thing of the past; there is no normal, even if the war ended today. War has changed my world and those who come after me into something different.

I like to think that I am well informed. I read, I watch the news, I learn from very intelligent people discussing Iraq, yet, the "why?" of it all somehow doesn't get answered.

By the time my daughter's great-great grandchildren observe the centennial of this war, I won't be here. Just as well, I don't think I can explain this war in logical terms anymore than history books.

Obesity Problems and a way to fix it.

Ok we have Tax for Smoking and Drinking. Why not a Fast food tax. Like Burgerking, McDonalds, Jack in the Box and TacoBell. Mainly Foods are high in Fat that are unhealthy. Hamburger fries and so on. Then use the money for Research on diabetes and premote healty Living by setting up url for healthy Food.

Foods that would not be taxed is Foods like salad and Fruits.

Yes I do eat at fast food restrants but It only Once or twice a Month.

An Orangutang was used along with several different methods to predict the outcome of Superbowl this Sunday. After observing the state of the union...? & the intelligence of the average American, I'll pick the Monkey for president if I'ts prediction of the Super Bowl out come is correct.......LOL

Imus, Insults, and Women

I happen to catch Rev. Al Sharpton interviewed on Today Show this morning. Whatever anyone thinks of Al Sharpton--I think he's a publicity seeking blowhard--he did make a couple of comments regarding the derogatory remarks by Don Imus about the women's basketball team at Rutgers that caught my attention. Sharpton was quoted as saying "she's not a 'ho, she's my daughter." As a father with a teen daughter, I can certainly relate to that. He also raised the concern that the insult was uttered on a government regulated airway, why was it allowed? That's a reasonable concern. I think this controversy is becoming an issue beyond race, but one of gender, which it should be. I think this controversy has gone beyond an insensitive remark by a sportscaster but raised an awareness of how pervasivly demeaning jargon is directed toward women. I am not only referring to "shock" d.j.'s or hip-hop rappers; insulting labels seem to have become a casual norm in a number of environments. That is a sad commentary about attitude and respect. I hope this controversy results in a new awareness and respect toward womenfolk. My daughter deserves nothing less.

JESUS FAMILY DISCOVERED IN A TOMB?

The whole thing sounds contrived to me. Jesus & followers were not wealthy people. Only affluent could afford tombs & bone boxes. Too convenient: Remains of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Virgin Mary, and a son, all in one room. I am disappointed rather than offended. Hardly the first discovery the "proves" or "disproves" ancient scriptures. If there is proof, by all means, bring it on. Making presumptuous statements belong in tabloids.
