08/18/2008 my brother, Michael Boyer, had been taken to the hospital for what we had thought was a spider bite or staph infection that was getting out of control, which caused his face to swell to where his eyes were swollen shut. After numerous test and being evaluated by a doctor we were devastated to find out that his kidneys had been failing. He was then rushed to the childrens hospital in Madera, California. After and ultra sound had been completed we had found out that Michael had only 15% of his kidneys that were functioning. There fore we realized that was why his face had been swelling. His kidneys were not funtioning enough to put off the red cells to fight off the infections. There had never been any side effects or symptom to this condition. We absolutely had no idea of the information to come. The doctors then decided to do a biopsy to find out why his kidneys were failing. 08/21/2008 we received the results of the biopsy. it was then we found out michaels kidneys were unrepairable. Our options for treatment are michael being placed of dialysis until there is a match for a kidney donor. End of August a peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter was placed for nightly dialysis.
With Mikeys father not having medical insurance on him, the bills are overwhelming, and my mom is really ready to lose EVERYTHING ! His medications cost (average) 1700$ monthly and his dialysis supplies are (again, average) 12,000- 17,000$ per month. His biological mother is not in our lives and she is incarcerated for the 6th time in 7 years, since my mom married his dad. So she is, uummm lets just put it nicely, not a bit of help.
Because of Mikeys condition he qualified for the make a wish foundation with the Childrens Hospital..(do some research..its a great program). However, we have no idea when he will get his wish. His wish was for a shopping spree. SO that he can own a PS3 to continue to do what he loves..and I think, its like a 5,000$ shopping spree . Until then, he wants and wants and wants, as we all do. The difference is that he cannot do the things we can. He is limited on foods, drinks, activities, sleep, medications and sooo much more. Things are honestly getting worse. The doctor says that he will not be able to urinate by himself soon, he may get "very sick"..
