Awareness is the key word organizers will stress. The theme for the event is "It Only Takes a Minute to Make a Differnece in the Life of a Child." It is designed to enhance skills and knowledge for those in the fields of child abuse/neglect prevention and seeks to raise awareness about what can be done to prevent abuse and neglect.
Keeping with the program theme, the topic for keynote speaker Donna Beegle will be "It Only Takes a Minute to Brighten a Child's Life." Beegle, CEO of nonprofit PovertyBridge, writes and lectures about communicating effectively across race, class, gender and generational barriers. She is the only member in her family who has not been incarcerated. Beegle greqw up in migrant labor poverty, left school for marriage at age 15 and turned her life around as a single mother of two, 10 years later, eventually earning a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
The Kern County Network for Children will present its annual "Report Card" on the county's children. Prevention programs will be highlighted. Vendors will offer a Resource Fair and a community reception will feature an awards ceremony. Attendees can also partake in a continental breakfast.
Callaborating to make the event possible are KCNC, Kern Child Abuse Prevention Council and KCDepartment of Human Services.
