Non-traditional students: Going back to school

More and more baby boomers (and beyond) are going back to school for personal or financial reasons. Some have hit dead ends in their jobs, or others are just looking for a change of scenerey. Some want to be lifelong learners.  So....they are going back to college.  This time, perhaps minus the toga parties. How about you?  Do you have any stories about going back to school after taking a break?

I started back to school in 2002 at the age of 47.  After being a LVN for now 33 years it was time for me to advance and finish what I started in 1975.  Taking one class at a time until I felt more confident in myself to take 2 or 3 classes at a time, I was able to finally finish my AS in Biology this year (at the young age of 52) and have now graduated and passed the state board of Registered Nursing.
I think that if anyone has any desire to go to school just start with one class and do it little by little.  You realize that you are way smarted than you ever realized!!  At our age we are more determined and do very well in school!!

I think going back to school the second time around does give you more perspective.
Plus, there are fewer distractions because you don't have time.  Wow, how I would have done things differently in college.

ill be 47 in june and i have been attending taft college since 2004.what started out as a couple of classes in  engine rebuilding and trouble shooting for fun and to finish my credits for an aa.  i enjoyed the automotive so much i not only changed my degree but also became a student worker as well.  going to school is so much more rewarding when you want to go then having to go.  no matter how young or old you are we.'re all the same when it comes to learning.  i will soon complete the automotive technology program but will still continue to take classes as long as i can.
