Vincent Brothers Trial

Vincent Brothers - Guilty

Today at 11:45, Vincent Brothers was found guilty on five counts of first degree murder.

We first got word that something was happening around 11:20 in the morning.  Bailiffs began assembling, and stood post at the front of the courtroom.

I called my newsroom.  Assignment editor Michael Trihey answered the phone.  Here's pretty much how the conversation went.

Kiyoshi: Hey Mike, something weird is going on here.

Mike: Really?  What's going on, do you think there could be a verdict?

Kiyoshi: I don't know, but the bailiffs are standing in formation in front of the courtroom.  This is pretty weird.

Mike: I got word from a source that a verdict is down.

Kiyoshi: Are you serious?

Mike: Yes.

Kiyoshi: Hang on.  (Talking to bailiffs) Hey guys, what's going.  Is there a verdict?  I mean, seriously, is there a verdict?  OK.  Mike, they aren't really answering.  I think something is going down.

Mike: OK.  Let me know for sure, but I'm sending a photographer.

And from there, chaos.  Official word came from the court clerk.  A verdict would be read at 11:45 AM.

Quite honestly, I was shocked the verdict came back so soon.  It's unusual. But quick verdicts in this case indicate the jurors didn't have much in dispute.  In fact, they didn't ask for anything to be read back to them.  They didn't ask to examine any physical evidence.  It's hard to say what the tipping point was, and we probably won't know until the trial and ends, and if jurors will talk with us.

I was outside the courtroom for the entire reading.  I watched the scenario unfold on a TV screen, probably just like you.

What do you think?

I think that Justice has been served.  Everyone knows he did it, the only person who believes he did not do it, is Vincent Brothers.  I am glad that he was found guilty.  He stole those poor innocent childrens lives, it is only fair that he pay with his own.  Whether it is life in prison or death.

Now that the verdict has been given, I'm interested in finding out why the judge dismissed that one juror just before the end of the trial.

I am also interested in hearing why he dismissed that one juror.  Maybe he found out that he had spoke about the case?  Will we be told the reason why at the end of the case or sooner?

It is in my "opinion" that Vincent Brothers was not given a fair trial.  No black man or woman is given a fair trial in "Clan County" Bakersfield is known for having racist cops, judges and lawyers. The jury knew very well how they would find this man before they heard the first opening argument. There was so much reasonable doubt in this whole case. Because the authorities and the biggest racist of them all Lisa Green went after Mr. Brothers the real killer or killers is still out there. Way to go Clan County you did it again!

I am relieved to see this sad, tragic affair come to a resolution. The jury didn't take alot of time to reach a verdict. Will they be interviewed?

I was so happy to hear the verdict. My co-workers and I were sort of stunned, but I believe he is guilty. I'm so happy that justice is being served. It doesn't take away the pain for the family or the friends and it doesn't bring the dead back but at least this monster is going to be punished for his actions.

I say just let him have some alone time out on the prison yard with a few inmates... they don't take kindly to baby killers. And it would save the government the money.

About the dismissed juror---
We have heard many rumblings as to why he was let go.  Several reliable sources indicated he had already made up his mind and may have been unwilling to change.  But again, we won't know for sure unless the judge unseals the transcripts from the proceedings in which he was dismissed.  We will be able to show you our brief, and relatively uninformative interview with him after the trial ends.  It's my hope he will come forward and talk with us.

Yesterday was a hard day..and I suspect today will be harder..for all of the children who looked up to Mr. B as their role model.  My kids who knew him both spent the evening yesterday crying and asking questions that I can not answer.
I have accepted that Mr. B has been convicted..he did it..there is no other way around it.  The hard part is looking at how much I trusted him..with my own kids even..and to know that he did commit these murders.  It just really rocks my insides to think I was so 'off' about him.
Time to move on..and deal with the heartbreak he has left behind..

How does it go; Guilty until Proven Innocent.  When he got onto the stand there was no passion in his testimony and he didn't have answers.  He could have proved his innocence I agree with Sala on this one, he hung himself when he testified.
