Vincent Brothers appeared on an ATM camera during an April 2003 trip that he made to Ohio, just a few months before making a similar trip in July during which his family was killed. Prosecutor Lisa Green calls the April trip a ‘dry run’ and says the ATM image proves that Vincent Brothers was able to get from Columbus, Ohio to Bakersfiled and back. Green says the dry run allowed Brothers to plan how he would commit the murders months later, but she says she can’t account for how Brothers traveled between the two locations.
Kern Schools Federal Credit Union records reinforce what the camera captured.
The records show someone used Brothers’ VISA card at a Columbus restaurant on April 13. Two days later, a withdrawl was made on Brothers’ account in Bakersfield. The VISA card was used the same day at a Columbus gas station. Melvin Brothers has testified Vincent gave him the card to use in Columbus. The prosecutor says that was part of Brothers' attempt to build an alibi.
Meantime, the defense contends Brothers remained in Columbus during his July trip. And attorney Michael Gardina says it is physically impossible to drive between Columbus and Bakersfield during the timeframe presented in the Green’s theory.
